BARBIE® DOLL CELEBRATES 45 YEARS
October 1 - December 31, 2004

FIM is excited to present its fall/holiday exhibition: American history as seen through its most beloved dolls - Barbie® doll…and friends. This collection of over 200 Barbie® dolls will bring back memories and enchant children and the young at heart. This exhibition is especially designed for FIM by nationally known collector JoAnn Winspur and the Barbie® dolls have been selected to celebrate four decades of lifestyles. From 1959 when Mattel introduced Barbie® at the annual Toy Fair in New York - to 2004, the Barbie® doll has kept in step with America’s ever-changing ideas and styles by engaging and empowering girls. As Barbie® doll celebrates its 45th Anniversary, we find that she has embraced more than 80 careers as well as consistently reflecting fashion and teenage lifestyles, all this despite myriad of trends evolving at a startling rate.

The exhibition unfolds through presentations of rare individual vintage dolls to vignettes of Barbie ® doll and her friends seen in settings familiar to us all: such as the college campus. Included will be the blushing Bride, Olympic Barbie, Cat Women Barbie, punk Barbie, career Barbie, astronaut and even Marilyn Monroe and patriotic Barbie together with Barbie clad in the fantasy fashion costumes of Bob Mackie and Dior and a host of fun and fabulous Barbie ® doll accessories.

FIM is pleased to present this special exhibition along with gallery presentations, tea parties, breakfasts, and story hours.
